Many people love the conical burrs and low RPM (rotations per minute) of the Mazzer Robur, but simply don’t have the same production needs to warrant the larger machine. The Kony fills this gap perfectly by offering the same low RPM (500) and a smaller conical burr set (63 mm compared to the Robur’s 71mm). The low RPM ensures the coffee is exposed to less heat and therefore hold its freshness longer. The conical burrs are preferred by many baristas for allowing the full and complex flavours to be preserved during the grinding process.
The Mazzer Kony Electronic allows the barista to program a specific grind time for both a single and a double shot using the touch panel on top of the dosing chamber. The digital display on the panel shows your chosen shot time, as well as keeping record of total shots ground. The programmable single and double shot buttons can be set in .05 of a second increments. It grinds directly into your portafilter for minimal waste.
The Mazzer Robur Automatic has no electronic programming pad and no timer wheel. Instead, the doser chamber is kept full at all times courtesy of a sensor that detects when coffee has been dispensed and automatically grinds more until the chamber is refilled. This is particularly useful in busy coffee shops where the baristas don’t have time to wait for each dose to be ground.
With a powerful 450W motor turning at a very low speed, this grinder is quiet and powerful. The large 63mm conical burrs grind the coffee beans quickly, while the patented stepless grinding mechanism allows infinite grind adjustment.
The superbly well engineered Mazzer Kony sits above the Major in the range and, at this level, is expected to be purchased solely for commercial use. Mazzer grinders are particularly well suited to busy coffee outlets where a Major model may be slightly overworked, but where a Robur can’t be justified. There are coffee houses all over the world that use the Mazzer Kony.
As with all Mazzer grinders, the infinite grind adjustment more than able to cope with anything from a fine espresso to a coarse grind more suited to use in cafetieres. One of the biggest selling points for the Kony is the immensely powerful 450w motor that turns at an incredibly slow 500 rpm. This has two main benefits – firstly that the machine is surprisingly quiet in operation as the motor is spinning slower than less powerful grinders, and secondly that this results in far less heat being generated. Grinder manufacturers are going to a lot of effort to reduce the heat produced during grinding as it can damage the delicate flavours in some coffees. This isn’t a problem for the Kony which delivers a perfect shot time after time.
The conical burrs are made using Swedish hardened steel and are considered within the industry to be among the best currently available, meaning they are more durable than many of its’ competitors. The innovative design means they are very easy to calibrate and even easier to clean should you need to access the burrs themselves. Of course you can use cleaning crystals instead and this removes the need to even clean the burrs directly.
